Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, NY- 1st Club to Host New York State Amateur for second time only six years apart.

MARCH 12, 2009

Ravenwood Golf Club has been chosen to host the 2009 New York State Men’s Amateur Championship for a 2nd time in only six years, beating out many other deserving clubs in Western New York.  The 2009 edition of the championship will run from July 14-July 18.  Ravenwood’s re-designed bunkers will be put to the ultimate test by some of New York’s most skilled players and the new clubhouse will be enjoyed by all participants and spectators.

The format for the championship is very similar to one that the USGA sanctions for their national amateur tournaments. The first 2 days are a 36-hole stroke play qualifier with the top 32 players advancing to the match play portion of the event.  In the event of any ties involving more than 32 golfers advancing, a playoff will be held.

If a player wishes to hoist the trophy on July 18th their game will be challenged to the utmost level.  The match play schedule of this championship is grueling.  It will be a true test of mental concentration and physical endurance, which will be at as much of a premium as skill and ability.  First and second round matches will be played on the 16th and quarter-final and semi-final matches will be played on the 17th.  The last two men standing will face off in a 36-hole final on the 18th.  If 36 holes are deemed insufficient to decide a champion, a sudden death playoff will occur.  The eventually champion could play in excess of 144 holes in 5 days, the equivalent of 2 full PGA Tour tournaments.

Entries will begin being accepted on the New York State Golf Association web site on March 31.  Qualifying tournaments start June 8 and run till June 30 at 11 different sites throughout the state.  A player of any age and skill level can try to play in this event provided they are able to advance from the qualifying tournaments and that they possess a valid handicap, are a member of a valid NYSGA member club, and comply fully with the USGA rules for amateur status.  For more details about the tournament as they become available, log on to the New York State Golf Association website at http://www.nysga.org
